Becoming Part owner of Modern rose Hollywood (0:21)
Din Thomas chose the Modern Rose as a business venture, inspired by its atmosphere and his long-time dream of owning a coffee shop. Introduced to owner Emilio through a mutual friend, he aimed to learn the business but found his strength in promotion rather than operations. He values creating spaces for enjoyment rather than waiting for them. The Modern Rose’s vintage Victorian decor aligns with his love for history, and he contributed chairs from his previous workplace at ESPN, though some of his furniture offers were declined. His goal is to make it a welcoming, chill space for himself and the community.
Early Career and Evolution of Fighting Style (33:30)
Din reflected on his early fighting career, including his time in Japan and challenges faced against opponents like BJ Penn. He struggled with self-doubt and intimidation early on, feeling overwhelmed by larger opponents. Emphasizing the importance of being well-rounded in martial arts, Din trained in various disciplines without a specific background, which gave him a unique perspective. His loss to BJ Penn was a pivotal moment, prompting reflection and growth as he recognized the need to adapt and improve his fighting style.
Coaching the next Generation (49:25)
Din is dedicated to supporting and mentoring fighters, stressing the importance of discipline and accountability in training. He believes fighters must take personal responsibility for their success and enjoyment, stating, “Nobody owes you fun. You want fun, you gotta make it yourself.” Din emphasizes the need for fighters to be well-rounded and to understand their opponents, comparing it to playing poker and knowing the other person’s cards. His approach encourages fighters of all levels and backgrounds to train with anyone, regardless of size or gender, fostering resilience and adaptability.
Creative Pursuits (1:01:24)
Din Thomas transitioned from fighting to coaching and acting, participating in projects like “Looking for a Fight” and upcoming films. His acting journey began while still fighting, with a focus on improv comedy to maintain stage presence. After a chance encounter with Dana White while coaching Amanda Nunes, Din joined “Looking for a Fight,” which led to commentary and acting opportunities. He emphasizes the importance of creativity in fighting, drawing parallels between his own style and the innovative approaches of current fighters like Kyler Phillips and his student, Gillian.
