Roy’s Martial Arts Roots (3:50)
Roy began martial arts at age 6 with judo, later transitioning to jiu-jitsu, inspired by his father, a jiu-jitsu pioneer in Venezuela trained by Brazilian instructors. Though a hyperactive child involved in various sports, Roy’s passion for combat sports led him to focus on fighting. Facing political and economic challenges in Venezuela, Roy pursued martial arts seriously, ultimately leaving the country for better opportunities.
Transition From BJJ to MMA (7:58)
Roy has not trained jiu-jitsu in six years, focusing instead on MMA and striking after moving to the U.S. He began with judo and transitioned to jiu-jitsu, appreciating its connection to judo and ground fighting. Although he decided to prioritize MMA for his career, he holds a brown belt in jiu-jitsu and was part of Venezuela’s national team.
MMA Presence in Venezuela (8:21)
Roy described the difficulties of training and competing in Venezuela, including limited resources, few MMA events, and the risk of injury without proper medical care. The struggling economy made affording proper diets and training regimens challenging, while inadequate medical facilities posed severe risks for injured athletes. He shared personal experiences of friends injured during protests, highlighting the dangers for athletes and citizens. Despite these challenges, MMA in Venezuela is growing, with promotions like Legion MMA, led by Roy’s friend Omar Morales, creating opportunities for local fighters. Roy’s father also contributed to jiu-jitsu’s development in the country as a pioneer of the sport.
Protests in Venezuela, Moving to USA (19:04)
Roy recounted his experiences with protests in Venezuela, where he became a government target due to his visibility as a national athlete and resistance leader. His activism, motivated by a desire for change and a better future for Venezuela, led to threats, harassment, and attempts to confiscate his passport. After facing imprisonment and danger, he left Venezuela, initially moving to Oklahoma, where he struggled with limited training and work opportunities. He later relocated to Florida, finding a supportive training community at Black House and eventually transitioning to Goat Shed to develop his striking skills and continue his MMA career.
On his Flashy Style and Finishes (46:38)
Roy highlighted that his successful kicks are the result of deliberate training and strategy, with every action in training serving a purpose. He and his team develop multiple strategies (Plan A, B, C) to support their primary plan. Roy aims for flashy knockouts using techniques like spinning kicks or flying knees while remaining prepared to adapt based on his opponent’s moves.
