Hidden Talent: Ballroom Dancing (13:40)
Thiago’s background as a ballroom dancer in Brazil played a key role in developing his rhythm, coordination, and footwork, which contributed to his success as a fighter. He also discussed the influence of Brazilian culture on social interactions and sexuality, highlighting its hands-on nature. Reflecting on personal growth, Thiago shared how he matured in relationships, learning from past experiences. His dancing skills were compared to those of other fighters, like Lomachenko, who have used dance to enhance their fighting abilities.
Camaraderie at American Top Team (38:13)
Thiago reflects on his 21+ years with American Top Team (ATT), emphasizing the deep, lasting relationships he’s formed with coaches and fellow fighters. His loyalty to ATT has been key to his growth as both a fighter and coach, with the gym’s family-like atmosphere fostering mutual respect and trust. He rewards his coaches with bonuses to show appreciation, strengthening the supportive environment.

Thiago shares the physical toll of his career, including injuries and surgeries, and discusses the financial struggles fighters face, such as management fees and taxes. Transitioning from fighter to coach, he finds fulfillment in guiding the next generation and hopes to give back to his community by pursuing law enforcement.
Meeting His Wife, Maturing (48:50)
Thiago met his wife through her stepbrother, an MMA fan, and they communicated for three to four months before meeting in person. Their first meeting was delayed due to his car breaking down, but they finally met just before Christmas. Thiago appreciated the time apart caused by her traveling job, as it allowed him to heal from a toxic previous relationship. Realizing he needed to make changes in his life, he became committed to settling down, knowing his wife wouldn’t tolerate any mistakes. He admired her independence, beauty, and intelligence, which motivated him to become a better partner.
On Fights Outside the Cage (1:00:58)
Thiago recounted a rare fight outside the ring at a sports bar in Orlando. A smaller individual bumped into him, leading to a verbal exchange. Thiago walked away, trying to de-escalate the situation. Later, a larger individual approached him aggressively with a group. The larger person swung at Thiago, who dodged and retaliated. He knocked the person out and kicked him twice out of reflex. Police arrived soon after, but Thiago left without further incident. He emphasized that such altercations were rare, as he avoids physical confrontations outside professional fighting.
Mental and Physical Challenges of Fighting (1:20:21)
Thiago speaks on how a fighter’s success heavily relies on the support system around them, as seen in a challenging training camp for a title fight against George St. Pierre, where key coach absences impacted his preparation. Thiago emphasizes how both victories and defeats shape a fighter’s evolution, requiring constant adaptation of strategies and mental approaches.
